Repurposed Camping Matches Container

Look at the cool little thing that I put together to hold our matches when we go camping!

I got the idea from this blog post, which I think is really cute but sort of impractical for camping because of the glass.  We occasionally buy gum in these plastic containers that I realized would be perfect to repurpose for the job because it won't break, yet will keep the matches nice and dry.  I added super fine sandpaper to both the outside and inside of the lid, so there's plenty of place to strike a flame.

I like the idea, but the sandpaper on the inside of the lid is just begging for the whole thing to go up in a ball of flames if you shake it. I've had it happen with a dozen matches inside a metal screw-top container - it blew the lid off and scorched carpet in the back of my car.

Hmmm...excellent point @Anonymous! I was just thinking that it would be good to have some of the sandpaper inside where it would also remain dry, but I wasn't thinking about the fire hazard. Maybe putting a little piece of paper over it to prevent contact with the matches would prevent that, while still keeping some of the sandpaper tucked away in a dry place? Thanks for your comment!

Putting the matches in upside down should solve that problem

This is a great idea; just make certain that you purchase "strike anywhere" matches. If you don't the matches will not strike on the sandpaper ( the striking strip on the boxes contains phosphorous & is necessary to make "regular" safety matches work).

That's what you call being resourceful. If we can recycle things and use them for another purpose, then why not? We save money and we also protect mother Earth.
