I was sitting on my couch, reveling in the calm that comes after the busy holidays season, and I looked up at the wall where we have a grouping of carved masks that we have gathered from different countries and cultures over the years. One of my favorites is an Italian mask representing the Roman god
Janus, who is a two-faced character, literally. He represents new beginnings and transition, when you look both backward and forward in time. He is also the god of doorways and bridges. The month January is named after him. Although it can be a hard adjustment at first, I love the lull of January because it does give a person time to ponder the past and plan for the future.
Are you hatching any great plans for the future? I am.
